What is a doula?

A doula believes in “mothering the mother” and supporting the partner. She enables a woman and her partner to have the most satisfying and empowering experience possible during pregnancy, birth and the early period with their new born child.
Research has shown that having a doula during birth results in:
50% reduction in the cesarean rate
25% shorter labor
60% reduction in epidural requests
40% reduction in oxytocin use
30% reduction in analgesia use
40% reduction in forceps delivery
Marshall and Phyllis Klaus and John Kennell - United States, 1993.
A doula's training and experience give her the capacity to offer you the emotional, practical and informational support you need at this time. Your doula must be someone whom you can trust. She has an intimate understanding of the birth process and can support you in consciously preparing for the birth. She will stay by your side throughout the entire birth process, regardless of the location, thereby providing a steady presence.
A doula will support you in your preparation for childbirth and parenting with information and can assist you in defining your birth wishes. She provides emotional support and practical comfort measures. To support you during birth she offers techniques ranging from breathing and relaxation to positioning tips. Your doula may also facilitate communication between you and your care providers.
A doula's role is to nurture you and to protect your wishes.

I think one of the best things we could do would be to help women/parents/families discover their own birth power, from within themselves. And then let them know it’s always been there, they just need to tap into it.

John H. Kennel, MD.

I recognize pregnancy and birth as a key moment in a woman and her families life.
I believe that each woman has the power and the ability to give birth. Being well supported throughout this process enables you to give the best of yourself while at the same time feeling safe and supported. Each woman is unique, experiences pregnancy and birth in her own way and has different needs.

As a doula I believe in being there for whatever it is you feel you need.
I see it as my role to be very open and receptive to what comes up in each moment while being strong, stable and calm. At times I will be present, there for you to lean on, massage you or support you in any other way. At other times I will be in the background leaving you to go into yourself but always within your reach if you need me. At all times I will support the bond between the mother and the father to be as this is your experience together.

It's your pregnancy and birth and your wishes and needs define my role.

My name is Siri Amrit Khalsa.

Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by and loved everything that has to do with pregnancy and childbirth. I was brought up to see these events as natural but at the same time as something very special in a woman’s life. I grew up as the eldest of a large family, living in a community where yoga, ancient ayurvedic teachings and traditions were part of our daily lives.
This as well as learning from my mother, who is a trainer of pregnancy yoga teachers and pre and post partum doulas and other close friends, who are natural childbirth and breastfeeding advocates, have all contributed to my innate knowledge and feeling for natural pregnancy and childbirth.

It was through the pregnancy and birth of my own son, when I received support from several wonderful women with specialties ranging from pregnancy yoga, to acupuncture and my wonderful midwife, that I was inspired to do something more with my passion.
It was in my growing search to find a way to express my desire to help others to have the best possible experience during their pregnancy and birth that I came across the ‘doula’.
I completed the doula training in Utrecht in March 2009 and continue to follow workshops and lectures with international childbirth educators such as Debra Pascali-Bonaro, Ina May Gaskin and Jacky Bloemraad-de Boer.
I have experience with massage and have completed a three year Karam Kriya training in consultation and communication. I also have extensive firsthand experience with breastfeeding and am experienced in water birth.

I come from a mixed background with an Israeli mother and a Canadian father and was born into a Sikh Kundalini yoga Ashram in Amsterdam. At the age of six I went to live in France where I lived until the age of 12. I went to high school in India over a period of five years. After having returned to Amsterdam to finish school and start university, I spent a year in Mexico living and studying and returned with my partner to settle in Amsterdam where we currently live with our son. These experiences have all helped me to understand people from all different walks of life and to be in tune with what it is that each one needs.
I speak fluent English, French, Spanish and Dutch and am able to support you in any of these languages.

Workshops Agenda

  • Monthly Singing workshop

Singing with Heart and Soul

Singing is a very special way to enjoy being together and to connect with yourself!

In our daily lives where intellectual activities often play a prominent role it is important to make space to get back in contact with your body and your inner feeling. Singing brings you back into your body through your breath and gives you space to simply be.
Inspired by the energy, inner peace and joy that singing brings me, this singing get together will be focused on the theme of pregnancy and the ‘mother’. During this time so many changes take place on the physical and emotional level that there is even more need to come down into your body and make contact with yourself and your baby.
In this workshop we will sing world songs inspired by the American Indian traditions as well as from Israel, Europe up to Latin America.
You are welcome to join if you or your partner are pregnant, if you work with pregnancy or if this approach to singing appeals to you.

WHEN: One Saturday a month from 15:00 – 17:00.
Doors open from 14:45
WHERE: Yoga Center – Den Texstraat 46, Amsterdam Center

Inwijdingsritueel voor de geboorte

ervaringsgerichte en informatieve avond
Vrijdagavond 4 juni 2010
